Journal of the Korean Institute of Rural Architecture is the official publication of the Korean Institute of Rural Architecture and devoted exclusively to the art and science of architecture in rural areas. The Institute was founded in 1998 and is now incorporated as a non-profit educational and scientific institution.

Journal of the Korean Institute of Rural Architecture welcomes manuscripts presenting information not previously published in journals on any aspect of rural architectural study, development, design, planning, technology, policy, etc. Submitted manuscripts may take the form of reports of original studies or reviews of significant prior work in a given area. All manuscripts are subject to review to ensure accuracy, clarity, and long-term value.

Journal of the Korean Institute of Rural Architecture is published four times a year on February 25th, May 25th August 25th, and November 25th.

Ⅰ. General Guidelines for Manuscripts

1. Preparation of Manuscripts

Manuscripts should meet the format defined by “Instruction for Authors.” Paper manuscripts should be written and arranged in a style that is succinct and easily to follow. An informative but short title, a concise abstract with keywords, and a well-written introduction will help to achieve this. Simple language, short sentences, and good use of headings all help to communicate information more effectively. Discursive treatment of the subject matter is discouraged. Figures should be used to aid the clarity of the paper. All manuscripts must be submitted online only (http://kirua.or.kr/).
An acceptable manuscript must be based on thorough knowledge. Papers will be written in the Korean and English languages. If a paper is to be written in English, authors are advised to have their manuscripts edited by someone proficient in English prior to submission. Readers should be carefully guided through the paper. The format of papers in Korean should follow <Regulation 1>, and the format of papers in English should follow <II. Manuscript Format>.

2. Eligibility of Authors

Every author must be a member of the Korean Institute of Rural Architecture. If they are not members, authors should apply for membership prior to the submission of papers.

3. Submission of Manuscripts

Submission of manuscripts should be submitted to the website of this institute with PDF and HWP or Microsoft Word files. In PDF files, authors must delete their personal information (name, position, affiliation, acknowledge, etc.). The chief editor selects appropriate reviewers and sends PDF files to them.

4. Manuscript return

The copies submitted will not be returned to the author after processing.

5. Fee for review and page charge

KRW 80,000 for the review and KRW 100,000 for publication must be paid with each manuscript submission. The minimum number of pages is 8 in Korean version and 6 in English version, but is not to exceed 12. KRW 60,000 is charged for every additional 2 pages if it exceeds 8 pages.
KRW 100,000 is refunded if the paper is not accepted.

6. Authors' Information

All authors must record their affiliation and position. Information regarding the corresponding author’s Affiliation, address of the affiliated institution, contact address (telephone and fax number) and email is written in the footnote. If the corresponding author is not specified, the first author is considered as the corresponding author.

7. Review and revision of paper

The review process aims to judge the publication of submitted papers. The paper should show originality, completeness, academic achievement, and reliability.

• 1) The chief editor and editorial board select three reviewers to review the paper.
• 2) When two of reviewers offer a judgment of "accepted (accepted after revision included)," the author is notified of the acceptance of the paper. If one of three reviewers decides to decline the paper, the result, along with the comments of the reviewer, is reported to two other reviewers who accepted the paper.
• 3) The reviewer should inform the chief editor of the results of review within 10 days of first receiving the paper. The author must send the revised paper to the chief editor within 90 days.
• 4) If two of reviewers decline the paper, it is rejected.

8. Judgment

The acceptance or rejection of each paper is decided by the editorial board. Types of judgment include accepted (without any change), accepted after revision, re-review after revision, and rejection. A reviewer must offer detailed reasons for rejecting a paper.

9. Others

Other rules unexplained here are accepted according to general instructions.

Ⅱ. Manuscript Format for Papers in English

1. Type Area and Layout:

The manuscript should be printed on A4-size (210 x 297mm) paper. Leave 26mm margins on the top and bottom, and 16mm margins on the left and right. Print the text in two columns, each measuring 88 mm across, with a blank space 6 mm wide in between. Insert and lay out figures, tables, and their captions in the text.

2. Typescript:

The manuscript must be typed in English, using 10.5-point Times New Roman font. Handwritten manuscripts will be rejected. Manuscript in English should submit with Microsoft Word program and can be used a Template on Homepage.

3. Length:

Expedited paper manuscripts have a minimum of 6 pages and must not exceed 12 pages, including spaces, figures, tables, and references.

4. Title numbering

• ① Chapter title : 1.
• ② Verse title : 1.1
• ③ Section title : (1)
• ④ Detail title : ①

5. Title page:

The first page of the manuscript must contain the paper title (sub-title), author’s full name(s), position(s), and main author name, information for corresponding author, first position, and acknowledgements. Author names should be listed in the order of the first name followed by the family name. The notation of the first name shall be determined by the author. (ex.) Kil-Dong Hong, Kildong Hong

6. Abstract and keywords:

An abstract and keywords should be included on the title page. Keywords of up to five words must be carefully selected to facilitate readers’ search. The words of abstract in number is proper about 200 words and lines are not to exceed 15.

7. Tables:

Insert tables in the text and arrange them across one (88 mm) or two (176 mm) columns of the page. Number the tables consecutively with Arabic numerals (e.g. Table 1. and Table 2). The table title is situated in semantic representation in the top middle portion. The first and last lines of tables should be delineated with heavy lines. Footnotes are placed at the bottom of tables.

8. Figures:

Insert figures in the text and arrange them on the page. Number the figures consecutively with Arabic numerals (e.g. Fig. 1. and Fig. 2).

9. Mathematics:

Number equations consecutively, e.g. (1), (2) and (3). Ensure that subscripts and superscripts are legible.

10. Measurement:

International System of Units (SI) should be used; if other units are used, SI equivalents should be provided in parentheses.

11. Footnotes:

All annotations are placed in endnotes. A limited number of explanatory endnotes are permissible. These should be numbered as 1, 2, 3, consecutively in the text and denoted by superscripts. Endnotes should be listed at the end of the paper with numbers linked to those in the text.

12. References:

References should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order by the first author’s surname.

• ① If references to the same author have the same year, they should be differentiated using 1980a, 1980b, etc.
  E.g. Smith (1975) or (Brown and Green, 1976), or if there are more than two authors, one et al. (1980).
